Registrar SpotlightMarion Nettles of Mobile County is Alabama's newest Registrar.
Family: I was born and raised in Mobile County, the second of seven children. Growing up, my parents instilled in us the values of closeness and support for each other, a bond we all carry today. My husband, Cedric, has had a distinguished career in law enforcement, retiring as a lieutenant from the City of Prichard Police Department; he is now employed with Walden Security at the federal courthouse in Mobile County. We are a blended family and parents to six successful and accomplished children and seventeen grandchildren. When were you first appointed and what do you like most about being a Registrar? State Auditor Andrew Sorrell appointed me to be a Registrar on April 1, 2024, but I have been employed with the Mobile BOR since 1996. When I retired from the county in March 2024, I had worked my way up to BOR Office Manager, a position I had held for 15 years. Before being hired at the Registrar's Office in 1996, I was a Police Dispatcher for Prichard and Mobile Police Departments. After accepting the Registrar's Office position, I was still determining if I would like the job and stay. After my first year of employment, I learned so much about voting and how the election process worked that I enjoyed it so much my tenure lasted 27 years. This job has given me many opportunities to assist people, which is what I love to do. Our work in the Registrar's Office is vital. So much work is put into an election year, before and after, to ensure the process is correct and that every aspect runs smoothly when it's time to vote. I understand that what happens in each BOR Office can affect the entire state of Alabama, so following the rules and laws is essential. I am always open to constructive criticism. My parents always said that a great attitude and work ethic is vital; this is my belief and what Cedric and I have instilled in our children. I am always open to correction; I like to say, "Teamwork makes the dream work." What are your hobbies or interests? I like to try my hand at almost anything that can be upgraded around my home: plumbing, carpentry, gardening, and flooring. I want to think of myself as a "Jane of all trades.” Before paying someone, I will read up on the task and do it myself. My sister and I recently laid ceramic flooring in one of the bathrooms in my home; the floor came out great! I also enjoy sewing, reading, singing, solving puzzles, and staying busy. What are you most proud of in your life? I am most proud of my children's and grandchildren's various accomplishments. I love my family. They are my everything. Lastly, I am proud of the appointment opportunity from State Auditor Andrew Sorrell to serve as a Registrar in Mobile County, Alabama. Judy Motlow, Chairman Mobile County, had this to say about Marion: “Marion is the most-hard working, dependable, dedicated, conscientious person I have ever known. She will always go the extra mile to help someone and is a wonderful team player. Marion is the perfect Registrar!” |
